Hi Sandy Drier, I remember you well. I do indeed remember "Stina"'s name as you did. Hope you are well. Also still looking for my roomie, Dorothy (Bunny) Bobrow. Anyone know where she is? Just learned of the recent death of classmate, Alan Pavel. How very sad I feel. My heart goes out to his wife, Honey Serata Pavel, and her family.

For many years, I've been seeking the whereabouts of Katye Johnson('67). She was also known as KEJ and her married name may be Carter. I lost track of her in 1969. She was the youngest of 3 sisters who attended CLS -- Sandy was the oldest & then Carolyn. I'd love to hear from any of them. Also...looking for Karen McPhee who was from Bermuda.(Not sure if she graduated from CLS, but she was there during '64-67.) Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. I am currently trying to locate some information relating to a gentleman who graduated from Cherry Lawn School in 1966. His name was Marc S. Bitzick and he recently passed away in August of 2004. We are attempting to locate family members of his, but have not had much success to date. I would be appreciative if anyone can recall any information relating to Mr. Bitzick. In particular, we need to determine where he was born and who his parents were. Additionally, did he have any siblings who may have attended Cherry Lawn School. Thank you in advance for any information that you can provide.

Hello to all; I graduated in 1965 and have not had much contact with anyone since then. I looked for the website because I still have my football letters and I decided to see if I could find a maroon and white varsity jacket. If anyone has a Cherry Lawn Varsity Jacket that in large that they want to sell, please let me me know. It would be great to wear the letter I got so long ago. If any of my classmates see this, it would be great to hear from you. I have had a lot going on in my life since leaving Cherry Lawn. Best Regards to all. Scott Ridge

Must be something in the air but over the last month I've seen two bands that I used to listen to at CLS all the time, Love and the Incredible String Band. Dave Pearl used to play the hell out of the first Love album on that record player in the lounge of Boys House. In a weird coincidence this guy at the Incredible String Band show was wearing a Baby's Coffee tee shirt. Babys Coffee is owned by CLS alumnus Gary Teplitsky. Both bands played well and exheeded my expectations. On an unrelated note lets all vote on November 2nd. Maybe, we can get this country back on the right track again.

I just stumbled across the Cherrylawn School website and it was nice to relive some old memories. It was with great sadness that I read Bradshaw Heaney passed away. I was a student at CLS in 1971. I have a copy of the year book from then. I was wondering if anyone knew if there is a picture of David Lee Roth in it and if so on what page? I have a nephew who is a big fan of his. I didn't know David personally, so I don't know what he looked like back then.

Dear CLS'ers, I am one of the Senior Members of the postings Class of '44. I was so impressed with all of the postings, the organization of the WEB Site, and the many constructive messages that have circulated over the years. Eddie Alperson (class of '44) sent me materials in 2002 and it took me all this time to uncover this site. Thanks Eddie and thanks to Mike for your great work. Looking back at those years at CLS (42-44) made me realize that it made a major contribution to my life's work. World War II was well on its way and many of the young men faculty were drafted and there was a shortage of staff in the Stein House. So, I became (I think elected) commissioner of the Stein House taking care of the younger children particularly in the evening. I think Peter Haidu's mother was the staff member in charge and I would relief her. Some of you might have been at CLS when I would tell spookie stories on the porch as you went to sleep. (Many years later I found out that this was not psychologically sound!) But I took the story telling seriously and thought that was the best thing for sleep! I graduated in '44 and the following week found myself in the army and 17 weeks later after Basic Training in Italy. Since my mother tongue is German I became a member of an Interrogation of Prisoner of War Team (IPW). At 19 and a Private First Class I interrogated a German General who surrendered his regiment to us. (I am sure the men and women in Iraqu today have similar experiences being unprepared [having just graduated high school] and knowing very little about the culture in which they find themselves. Let me skip to the more salient points of my career --- for the Stein House experience led me to try to go to College. Roger Strasser '36 was our English teacher & guidance counselor, now 1945 a trained Occupational Counselor suggested that I try becoming a salesperson in a Department Store.....Bad advice...for I applied to NYU School of Education and became a classroom teacher, later demonstration school teacher and later in my career a principal of schools.(Great Neck, Schenectady & Harrison NY.) I also did a stint in Afghanistan (56-58) helping to develop a University Program there with a Columbia University Team of faculty. For the last 30 years I was a professor at Wheelock College in Boston. And now co-founded a National/International Non Profit organization - Playing For Keeps which is dedicated to improving outcomes and the quality of life for children by promoting healthy, constructive play. NOTE: Those of you who are living in Washington DC might like to come to our upcoming Conference October 7-9, 2004. In reading all of your journeys I became impressed as I thought back of my own experience and how critical those two years were and contributed to my later life activities. I look forward to attending the next Reunion. Should you be in Boston do send me an email and let's recount old times at Cherry Lawn. My best to all of you. Thought the "Boom Lay Boom Lay" came from TS Elliot (which Bazz had us immersed in to the point where our senior class play was a dramatized version called "A Poet in the Wasteland")....but it was indeed CONGO. I just re-read it and can hear Bazz's voice. Sorry I couldn't make this year's reunion; but it's great to read all the postings from old friends and to see the photos.

If my memories don't betray me, the "Boom Lay, etc." that Bazz used to read was a portion of TS Elliot's The Hollow Men...either that or a portion of The Wasteland, but TS Elliot either way. (Now I'll have to dig out the old dusty books to find it.)

DEAR MIKE & CLS'ERS, AFTER FINDING OUR WEBSITE AND ENJOYING REUNION PHOTOS AND MESSAGES, I FELT I WOULD SHARE MEMORIES WITH YOU. I LIVE IN RYE WITH MY WIFE, LORI, AND WORK A LABOR OF LOVE AS A VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION COUNSELOR AND PSYCHOTHERAPIST WITH YOUNG ADULTS WHO HAVE PSYCHIATRIC AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES AT WESTCHESTER JEWISH COMMUNITY SERVICES. MY FAVORITE THOUGHTS LINGER ON BAZ DRAMATICALLY READING ROBERT SERVICE'S "THE CREMATION OF SAM MCGEE" AND "SHOOTING OF DAN MCGRUE"; ANOTHER THAT THUNDERED "BOOM-LAY-BOOM-LAY-BOOM-LAY-BOOM". OUR TRIP WITH MR. ZUBER TO THE U.K. IN THE SUMMER OF '66 WAS A CULTURAL FEAST INCLUDING HAGGIS IN SCOTLAND. A TREAT, AT THE TIME, WAS TO LISTEN TO ANDY ALBERT ON THE PIANO AND T. MONK ON DRUMS, CLASSES OUTDOORS IN THE SPRING, HORSEBACK RIDING MY FIRST YEAR, AND STROLLING TO THE POND FOR PRIVATE TIME WITH MY GIRLFRIEND, ANNETTE SAMET. THOSE WERE MY FIRST "GROWING UP DAYS", SWEET AND BITTER-SWEET. I WOULD LIKE VERY MUCH TO HEAR FROM MY CLASSMATES. It's been four days since I attended this year's reunion and after 35 years, I realize how much those 2 years I spent at Cherry Lawn has played such an important role in my life. The best moment this past Saturday was seeing my former roommate, Sara Korzennik! The fact she was able to contact me through surfing the Internet, found my name, called and then our calling back and forth for seven weeks before the reunion made it seem just like yesterday! Friends forever . Now on a lighter note, a BIG thanks to everyone involved in planning this annual reunion, someone commented we are family and how true that felt. Spending time with other former Cherry Lawn students from all generations was truly a wonderful experience. Like Sara mentioned in her e-mail, when we went to Cherry Lawn Park, fond memories for both of us seemed to take over. Like they say, you can never go back but thanks again everyone for bringing back those special memories of all the good times I will always remember at CLS . Enid S. Levinson (1967-1968/1968-1969)

I just got back to looking at this site again -- it's great having the memories recalled -- and have an addendum to Dr. Stael's full name. As I memorized it 54 years ago, it was "Christina Maria Elizabeth Stael von Holstein til Vapno Bogoslovsky" -- and I've left off a few marks over some of the vowels, too. Anyone else from around '50 remember it that way?

Hi Mike - Spent an hour going thru the site -- it was really nice though I don't remember too much from being there & I was one of the students that contributed to that problem. Alison Wilmarth & I were coeditors of the yearbook ('70}. I was a junior, she a senior. I had the then brilliant idea, with Alison (obviously there was NO adult supervision) of not putting any names under the pictures of the students. We all knew who we were & since we were all nihilists or exitianialists or objectionists & no one would live to see 30, who cared who everyone was & we'd at least be able to remember for another 10 years.,, that was the train of our thinking in those years...Needless to say I have very fond memories of my year & summer (graduated 1 year early by going to summer school) at Cherry Lawn - received college level courses & though Mr. Zuber might drop-dead to hear this from me - he was one of the finest teachers I have ever encountered. He made history come alive. Obviously the website has jogged many memories & I'm still looking for my wonderful roommate Laura Schweitzer --if anyone knows anything. My new info is Betsy Platnick , Larkspur. California (Marin County) 415-924-8817 with e-mail Betsy_Platnick@hotmail.com. Thanks for bringing it all together. Betsy

Hey Mike,

Rob here. Sorry for not staying in touch. You may add me to the collective. Unfortunately, I won't be able to come to the reunion this year but it's always nice to hear from you guys. I appreciate all you do and as a web site designer and administrator myself I know how much work goes into keeping a site current. I did receive the card, by the way.

I currently live outside of Nashville in Franklin, TN and I'm the Tour Manager for Sam Bush. You can see a tour schedule on his website http://www.sambush.com . Sam has a new record "King Of My World" on which I have credit as Assistant Engineer. I've been working, most currently, with contemporary bluegrass artists and have recently worked with, David Grisman, Jerry Douglas, Alison Brown, Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer, to name a few.

I was excited to assist Sam with his set with Jorma Kaukonen this year at Merlefest. Jorma and Sam recorded an album together last year called "Blue Country Heart." Jack Casady was also there to perform a set with Jorma as Hot Tuna. You may remember Jack and Jorma played with the Jefferson Airplane. Also, we were all honored to meet John Paul Jones, bass player for Led Zepplin at Merlefest this year who sat in with John Cowan's band, and with Sam on his 1956 Electric Mandolin they played a most excellent acoustic rendering of "Dazed and Confused."

I also did a few shows with the jazz supergroup Fourplay last year as an audio engineer and will work with them in the future if my schedule allows.

Folks are welcome to visit my websites if they want to see what I've been up to over the years.
I hope all goes well with all of you and that everyone has a wonderful summer.

Best,
Rob Stokes

Hello to everyone from Cherry Lawn. I attended for 2 years, '62-'63, the summer of '63, and '63-'64. Cherry Lawn was a positive, seminal experience for me. "Bazz" Burwell, Dr. Boris, Dr. Stael, Mr. Zuber, among others, had a profound effect on me. The openness of intellectual discourse, in the midst of that era's emerging cultural paradigm shifts, were something which gave me a grounding that simply wouldn't have been possible elsewhere. I went on to graduate from a public High School, and Attended NYU. I was in the thick of New York's amazing cauldron of the arts and social foment and positive change as a young man. I lived in the East Village from '66 until '85. Starting in '77 I became "bi-coastal", and also lived here in L.A. In '85 I moved out to California permanently. I spent a number of years being involved in N.Y. City's avant-garde theater scene, supporting myself at various amazing "straight" jobs. I can trace what has, to date, been an interesting and varied life, back to experiences at Cherry Lawn and having known a number of truly gifted souls there on the faculty, staff and among fellow students. To all of them, and those of you I've never met, Hello! I now work at Paramount Studios in Hollywood. I'm on the Board of Directors of Sunset Hall - sunsethall.org - a retirement home for old, in age but not spirit, progressive free-thinkers. (Imagine what Cherry Lawn would've been if it had also managed to develope a retirement home! Thats Sunset Hall!) I'm currently up to my eyeballs as the organizer of Sunset Hall's annual fund-raiser on the Paramount Lot. Its taking place this Sunday, May 2nd. The theme is "A Peaceable Assembly in Defense of The Bill of Rights". Sounds like something we'd have done at Cherry Lawn, huh!? Life is good. Contact me.

Whoaaa, Regina "Purple" Jenner, I remember you!!! A completely coincidental Cherry Lawn twist that I only discovered about three years ago: Kenneth Silver, who passed away about a year ago (see memorial page) was my mother's step cousin. The David Beck mentioned in his bio was my maternal grandfather. Somehow, Ken and I discovered out mutual connection to Cherry Lawn (I would have graduated in 1973) and meant to plan a visit to the site there together one day which alas, never took place. He was an amazingly spirited, energetic and brilliant guy, also a devoted and fun-loving surrogate grandfather to my two kids. Maybe we will see y'all at the reunion in July. If we can make it I will try to bring some photos of Ken.

Hi Everybody!

I wanted to let everyone know that the Cherry Lawn Alumni Association has donated five "Bricks" for the new children's playground at Cherry Lawn Park. The bricks commemorate the class years: 1918-1929, 1930-39, 1940-49, 1950-59 and 1960-72. We have heard that some folks are planning to buy a brick for specific class years as well. These bricks will ensure our legacy to the property in a small way for a long time to come. I hope everyone will get a chance to see the new playground at some point... maybe this summer when you come to the beach! Our annual postcard about the get-together should be going out in the next few weeks. Look for it!

My best regards,

Lewis Meyerson, President

I am saddened to read about the passing of Mr Robert Cosby. I remember meeting this giant of a gentleman during my first summer at CLS. Everyday when we would pass one another he always had a great big smile and never failed to say "GREETINGS & SALUTATIONS"........I am thankful to have known Mr. C.. He will be truly missed. I'm delighted to have found Cherry Lawn's website. I'm trying to connect with classmates graduating in 1949. I'd been a student for 6 years and they were among the happiest memories I have. Does anyone know what happened to Bob Burns who graduated in 1944? I know he'd gone into the Navy after graduation and then on to Mount Saint Mary's College in Emmitsburg, Md. Lost track of him after that.I've had a lovely life in Connecticut... graduated from Sacred Heart Univ. in Bridgeport in 1981, and am now retired and living in Boca Raton, Fl. There's SO much to do here and I love it. Feel free to write, and Christine Felix, I've sent an e-mail to you... have you received it? My e-mail address is: hgari@aol.com Blessings to all Cherry Lawners... Helaine Fendler Gari

Hi Mike! What a joy to see this website. I'm looking for Hedda Gluck Tischler...who am I kidding? In the last few years, she was at both of my grown children's weddings and my grandson's bris! It was fun to see Mr. Zuber's artwork and Bazz' photos. I live in Ohio and spend time traveling the world trying to "find myself". I'm off to Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia in two weeks. I was part of the class of 1961 but finished in NYC at Eron Prep. This school is also closed...it must be me! Looking forward to hearing from some of my classmates. If you can post approximately what years your grandmother was at Cherry Lawn and what position she held, it might help jog the memories of folks who may not remember her by name. It's been 32 years since the most recent class attended the school.

So, here is the short version of my story: Came out west to Boulder, dropped out after 2 semesters and started working and volunteering with political endeavors and a halfway house for wayward teens. Hitchhiked allot around Colorado,Utah, Nevada, Oregon and California. Settled in Leadville,Colorado around '74. Lived and worked, learned to back-country ski, climb, live in a remote area comfortably. Became a welder and worked underground at Climax mine for 2 years. In '78 Nov,with my boyfriend, traveled overseas to Europe, took the orient express to Turkey, then overland to Iran, Afghanistan, India and into Nepal. We lived in Nepal for 7 months trekking and climbing. On our return to the states we moved to western Wyoming and claim stake surveyed for a year in the western states for oil exploration companies. My boyfriend and I parted ways and I moved to Alaska. There I surveyed in Prudoe Bay, and lived north of Anchorage in the Matanuska Valley. In '81 I came out side and discided to go back to college. Returned to Boulder and started classes for Nursing. In '83 moved down to Albuquerque to complete my BSN from the university of New Mexico in '86. I've worked adult ICU and ER till '98 when I became a hospital supervisor. In '88 I married but by '93 we divorced . In '96 I had my daughter Tessa Rose, and decided that graduate school would wait. Just this Oct I left in hospital, and took a job with the University of New Mexico as a case manager for the medically fragile population. It is a major change for me time wise and professionally, however I needed a change and want more time for my daughter and I, and my outside endeavors. I have volunteered as a ski instructor for The adaptive ski program going on 10 seasons. It gets me on the snow and socializing with great people. Three years ago or so I discovered thru a good friend a great dance community and that also keeps us involved. I'd love to hear from you! Regina
