Having no clue that I was missing, I didn't realize that I needed to be found. I knew where I was at all times (well, most of the time). For some reason I Googled 'Cherry Lawn School' and stumbled upon the website as probably many of you did. I was in the class of '70 but left after '69 to graduate from Commack South on Long Island. Seeing the names and the faces from so long ago has brought back a flood of memories. I'll be posting a letter shortly to catch up anyone who might remember me. Laura Schoen mentioned me in one of her posts so at least one person remembers me. Thanks Laura.

Hi, I just read Neil Duskis' letter of 10/14/04 which brought back a great memory. One Wed. afternoon, in the lounge of Boys' House, I cut a record of Rich Bonim playing his rinky-tink piano (with thumbtacks in the felt hammers) and Al Himmelrich playing the drum (turned over tin wastebasket) with his brushes. They let me keep the record and I treasured it for many, many years. I had it from 1951 until It was destroyed in 1966. I really miss it. What a fun afternoon that was.
I want to wish you all a happy holiday, and a great new year.

Hello to All: I was class of '65. I was interested to see the comments about T. Monk. When I knew his he was a sophmore and was very quiet and kept to himself. There was a recent find of previously unrealeased recordings of his Dad's that were found by accident in the National archives and are being released. I heard Monk invterviewed on NPR about the background of the find and the release. He was very articulate and knowedgeable about a facinating discovery. I was also interested to read the post about mistakeing the the Thenstead brothers as related to Monk. I have thought about it since I read the post and remebered with great fondness how wonderfully Jeff Thenstead played the flute and the vibes. He would make the great music that we could hear throughout the boys dormatory. Of course we just took it for granted at the time because we were too young to know better. But 40 years later I still have great memories of being exposed to Jeff's music in such a personal way. Does anyone know if he ever did anything with his talent? All the best. Scott Ridge

What a great surprise to find the Cherry Lawn message board. For several years I've been trying to locate William Tomlinson, and finally "googled" for Cherry Lawn.
I attended for only two years (40-42) but my time there did help to shape my life.
I want to tell you how much I enjoyed reliving memories and that seeing that Cherry Lawn does live on.
I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who may remember me from 1940-1942.

Sad news. We have learned of the recent death of Cindy Meyerson Crane, younger sister of Lewis Meyerson. Cindy attended Cherry Lawn in 1971 and 1972, and would have been (I think) part of the class of 1974. Please see the "In Memoriam" page for more information.

Hi Deni! You have unwittingly recreated a morning meeting that I remember... Sort of. I do not remember if it was Bazz or, Mr. Zuber, but one of them started a morning meeting by smashing a coffee mug on the pavement. The lesson was that anyone could break a coffee cup, but it took far more ability and determination to make one. I think we were supposed to see the connection between that and some of the protests and riots that were taking place around the country at the time. I'm sorry to hear about your cup. As far as I know, the original supply was exhausted long ago. I don't know what the logistics would be to have more made. If I can find a source that will run them in very small batches, or even "on demand" one at a time, (cafe press?) then I'll see what can be done. By the way - I just heard that Mr. Zuber's art show on Saturday was a huge success and he set a new record for sales of his paintings.

Not only do we hear from them, members of the classes of 1973 and 1974 often show up at the reunions. You might get more response if you posted your name. No one is gonna remember you if you make it impossible for them to remember you. Heck, I would probably remember you if you gave me the chance! Please post again, with your name, and maybe YOU can start a conversation about the two "lost classes" of Cherry Lawn.

Hey, Richard... there's a bit of confusion.

Thelonious Monk Sr. once played a benefit concert for the school. TS (Class of 1967) was at the 1999 reunion, and spoke fondly of his days at Cherry Lawn, as well as thanking Mr. Zuber for instilling a passion for history in him. Here's his current bio:

I am totally surprised to see that none of you are talking about our Thelonious Monk the original had two sons at our school in the mid 60s Jim and Jeff then the now Thelonious Monk emerged from OUR school and is one of the best know jazz musicians in the world. Not only that - he is a really nice guy and T was in the class of 68 or 69. Hey T how are you doing out there.

Thanks Dave. It was a long time ago but I still remember Havens playing his version of Strawberry Fields. So the school went to the Filmore for that Jefferson Airplane and Young Bloods show. That was after my time but I went with some friends from my hometown. I remember Jefferson Airplane opening with White Rabbit and playing a lot of stuff from the Volunteers record.
By the way, I saw one of the Cream reunion shows at Madison Square Garrden last week. It was surprisingly good. Nice to hear Eric Clapton step out and really play like he did back in the old days.
If memory serves I bought Fresh Cream in that little record store in a shopping center in Darien right at the end of my freshman year in 67.

If you are a hard core folkie, you may already know about this... Jim (Roger) McGuinn, of Byrds, and other fame posts a great new folk recording every month from "The Folk Den. http://www.folkden.com ...It's a real treat. He's been doing it for about 10 years. My younger brother is somehow pals with McGuinn and the songs are also available on his website at http://www.reveries.com

I have a vivid recollection of going to see a very talented, vibrant young nineteen-year old Maria Muldaur (then Maria D'Amato) with the Jim Kweskin Jug Band somewhere in NYC with the CLS Folk Club... Don't recall who our chaperone or advisor was, but it was a kickass concert!
Either '65 or '66.
Anyone out there who remembers???
After I graduated from CLS I went to the School of Visual Arts in the city and worked 3 part-time jobs...as an esteemed member of Macy's Elite Flying Squad (which meant I was trained to work in any dept.in the store), a deli runner in the garment district at lunchtimes, and an usher in a waaay tooo big orange parachute jumpsuit at the fabulous Fillmore East. I lost a great deal of my hearing by standing next to those behemoth speaker towers, but I saw so many legendary rock groups of the time... However, I remain a true, hardcore folkjunkie to this day.
Would love to hear from any of you who knew me.

The 69-70 class trip was to the Fillmore also. We saw Jefferson Airplane and The Youngbloods! The seniors got the good tickets, I was a sophmore and ended up sitting next to Mr. Zuber in the last balcony. The tickets were $5.50, 4.50 and 3.50. Geeze, where did those prices go?

Neil, Richie Havens indeed was at Darien HS, but it was the following year, 68-69. At the same venue was Ravi Shankar. That year also included the Mothers somewhere in Stamford or Norwalk, and Fillmore East gigs by Canned Heat, Fleetwood Mac (back in their pap-free days), Country Joe & the Fish, Pentangle and Rhinocerous. As I recall, Canned Heat was godawful, but no surprise there.

Holy Smokes! I now realize that I had two groups mixed up. The Vagrants were originally from Long Island. I was connected with a Connecticut band called "The Wind Jammers" who played in many of the same places on Long Island as the Vagrants. The Danbury group I confused them with was called the "BlueBeats". I used to see both of them as well as the Rascals, (originally "The Young Rascals") at a bar in Portchester called Rapsons. I played there a few times myself. The Rascals were also from The Danbury Area. Felix Cavilier's parents still live in the same house in Danbury, and Rascal guitarist Gene Cornish still lives in Wilton. Man! It's all coming back!

The Vagrants were from the Danbury, CT area. Lead guitarist Leslie Weinstein eventually removed the "in" and "ein" from his last name, shortening it to West! The Vagrants had minor success with the release of a 45 rpm single on Atco Records. The A side was R-E-S-P-E-C-T, covered later by many artists including Aretha Franklin. I have a copy of it around here somewhere...

The Doors show was at the Filmore and was believe, it or not, a 10th grade class trip although other grades camer along! The Donovan show was at Queens College of all places. A band called the Vagrents opened, One of the guys from the Vagrents went on to form a popular band called Mountain. We also went to see the Vanilla Fudge at Hunter College and the Loving Spoonful at Fordham University in the Bronx. Maybe, if memory seves Richie Havens at Darien High School as well.

Sara, they are quite a find and, actually, I didn't find them. Adria Frede, '66, saw them on Ebay and brought my attention to them. But I definitely had to bid on them! They aren't from glass negatives, by the way. They are very thick silver gelatin negatives and seem to be from a hand-holdable 4X5 camera, most likely a Speed Graphic, the kind of camera press photographers used back then. I tried using one and actually shot the photos of the 1965 Cherry Lawn Christmas Pagent that appear in the 1966 yearbook with it. It was a handful and I returned, very appreciatively, to a 35mm camera after lugging that thing around for a while. The aerial has lots of nifty detail brought out with digital restoration that you can't see online. If anyone wants me to send it to them as a larger, print quality file, via email, just let me know. Even if you don't print it you can look around the campus as it was in 1939 on your screen.

What a surprise, finding the memories of Cherry Lawn. While making a trip through Darian, I decided to look on the web for the address so I could see what was left. Very disappointed to see everything gone, but also happy to see CL really does live on. I only attended for one year, 1963-1964. Although there are NOT a lot of fellow students I remember, I was floored when the last photo of the year I looked at (the first 1999 photo, I worked backwards) and saw the one person I did remember. Heidi Detweiler. Unless I am completely wrong and way off base, we were, at the ripe age of 13, boyfriend and girlfriend for awhile. One of the most memorable moments in my life, was when, sitting in math class we heard of the assassination of JFK. I'll never forget sitting in the boys dorm watching the funeral in the days that followed. I recall with great fondness, the raids on the girls floor below our floor. I had acquired a nickname of "Mouse" as I had taken to caring for the white mice we had in our science class. And remember walking to "Town" and going to the pet store to buy more mice. Looking over all the pictures I do remember Mr. Zuber but not many others. If anyone has the '64 yearbook, it would be wonderful to see it posted. I now live in NYC, own a graphic design studio with my wife of 22 years and do Macintosh consulting. What a trip down memory lane this is. If anyone actually remembers me, please let me know.
Best wishes to all,
Philip Gruber

Monty's contact information is listed in the online directory. If you are not sure under what year a person may be listed, look them up in the alphabetical directory first. When you click on their name in that list, it will take you directly to the class page where their information is listed. People are listed by the last year they attended the school, regardless of whether that is the year they would have graduated. Someone who would have graduated in 1959, but left the school at the end of the 1957 school year would be listed in the class of 1957 with an asterisk by their name to indicate that they graduated elswhere. No matter what class you were a part of, it is worthwhile to look at the class pages of a few years preceeding, where you may discover listings for classmates who left before their senior year.

Thanks for stopping by, Richard. I added 3 more pages of photos this morning, and I'm sure there will more whenever those with film cameras have a chance to get them developed and send them to me for scanning. All the ones so far were taken with digital cameras, which is why they are already up. The collection of scanned yearbooks continues to grow as well. 1970 should be up soon, to be followed by 1968 and 1969. If you know of someone who has a copy of the 1964 Cherry Pit, that's one I haven't been able to locate
yet. It leaves a gap in the series that I'd like to fill! Mark Sherbow loaned me 1962 & 1963, but didn't have 1964.

Hi Manuel, glad to see you've found us. I thought you might be interested to know you had a hand in the bronze memorial plaque that we installed at Cherry Lawn a few years ago. As I was developing drawings for the bas-relief work for the plaque I found I couldn't remember exactly what the morning meeting porch and lectern looked like. I did remember seeing a drawing you did of the porch in the 1967 yearbook (1966-67 was my first year at Cherry Lawn). That drawing became the basis for the plaque I sculpted. If you get a chance to visit the grounds and see our plaque, I hope you recognize your influence! I remember you because, of course, all the youngsters remember the older students, while you seniors could hardly remember every eighth grader that got underfoot.
best regrds, Peter Lewis

Mike,
My name is Manuel Delgado, I belong to the Cherry Lawn School Class of 1967. I have lived and worked all my life in Venezuela and, since last fall I started teaching architecture at Wentworth Institute of Technology in
Boston. Please, make my address available at your web site, I would like to get in contact with all my friends from Cherry lawn School whom I have remembered so well for the last 38 years. I hope that is still possible.
Best regards,
Manuel

I discovered this website yesterday, and was flooded with memories and emotions as I worked my way through the site. I only attended Cherry Lawn for one year -- 1961-62, as a 9th grader -- when my name was Barbara Fink. But my memories of Mr. Zuber, Dr. Boris, Dr. Stael, Monsieur Grondin, Dr. Bulova, Mrs. Wheeler, and so many others are as fresh today as they ever were. I remember so many of you who are listed on this site from those years.
I moved to Florida 2 1/2 years ago, after 27 years in Boston, and wish I had learned of this site and your reunions before this year, because I could and would have attended reunions.
A few years ago, my husband and I went on a drive through Darien, trying to find where Cherry Lawn was, but I couldn't find any signs that it had existed. It is nice to know that at least the park exists.
I've done so many things in the years since we knew each other: graduated from the University of Iowa, earned Master's degrees at Fordham and UMass/Boston, almost completed my Ph.D. (all but dissertation) in Law, Policy, and Society at Northeastern. Worked in many fields -- in advertising & PR, as a journalist, in community-based corrections (half-way houses and employment programs for ex-offenders), and many other things. In the '70s, I spent two years in one of the last of the Great Society programs -- Teacher Corps -- teaching in a school for delinquents from Bed/Stuy -- a job that nearly killed me. I also spent about 15 years in human resources training & consulting -- first in state government, then for an international consulting firm, and then (for 7 years) as the President of my own training and consulting firm.
I married relatively late in life (1989) and after 16 years the honeymoon lives. My husband, Spencer, is my soulmate and best friend; a tall, smart, funny man who can always make me laugh. My mother always said that all good things are worth waiting for!
About 2 1/2 years ago, Spence and I moved to Florida, and I've started a new career (last year -- at age 56) teaching social studies to Gifted students in an inner-city, Title 1 middle school in West Palm Beach. I'm also teaching Intensive Reading to the school's struggling readers, so it's an amazing and diversified job, teaching so many subjects to students at both ends of the scale. It's the hardest job I've ever had -- emotionally, spiritually, intellectually -- but also the most rewarding and fun. Not having any children of my own, it's also mind expanding to suddenly have more than 100 -- drawn from every corner of the world, and speaking many languages.
In my new career, I am inspired by my memories of Dr. Stael, probably the single best teacher I ever had in my life. It was while telling my husband stories about Dr. Stael yesterday, and saying that I'd like to be "one of the great ones," like her, that I started looking around the web and found this website.
Reading the site has been a learning adventure -- finding out what an extraordinary place Cherry Lawn really was, and how many amazing people have graduated from it. Age 13 (my year at Cherry Lawn) was a painful one for me. But it was wonderful to learn about the history and philosophy of Cherry Lawn, and to realize why it was such a special place.
A special thank you to Mike for creating and nurturing this website, and enabling us to meet again, even though Cherry Lawn itself no longer exists.
I hope that a few of you will remember my name -- I'd love to hear from you, and learn what you've been up to all these years!
Love to all you Cherry Lawners -- wish I could be with you at the reunion later this month!

Yo Sara, I took your advise and booked into the Westin, where I suggest we commandeer the cocktail lounge after dinner. Hear that, fellow Lawners? Besides, you don't need a AAA card if you're AARP, which I fear we all qualify for. I just hope that business, i.e. the imminent self-destruction of the AFL-CIO, doesn't have me in Chicago that weekend.
Speaking of unions, hi Deb, it's good to see you on the site, and hear about you after all these years. I didn't know you were in Vegas. I used to be with the Teamsters, who as I'm sure you know are drawn to Sin City like swallows to Capistrano, only different.
Peace and love, y'all.

I'm so glad to see this message board. There are days that I really wish we were all back at morning meeting in the snow..I'm on marriage #5 but only three husbands..but I have terrific daughters and wonderful sons in law, and am the grandmother of 9..ages 12 years down to 17 months & only 2 are girls.and they are both adorable. All the boys are awesome especially the youngest...Hope to hear from anyone from CLS, and my husband has been claiming me as the little girl from Cherry Lawn for years, We have friends in broadcasting and they think it's hysterical I went to the same school as David Lee Roth.. Then I direct them to the website...or pull a Cherry Pit...
If anyone is coming to Vegas in the next year or so I would love to meet with them. After that we are retiring to the swamplands of Northern Louisiana.
I still don't know how Mrs. Horvath knew I was sneaking out at night, and the evenings in the shack in the woods behind the boys dorm....what an education. and I learned a lot in class too.
My love to all of you

Hi Everybody
Hope you all are having a great Spring/Summer so far.
I want to thank the folks that have made donations to the Alumni/Reunion fund recently. Hopefully there will be some more.
With our next reunion about a month away, I just wanted to say, if you have been thinking of attending a reunion, this might be the one to attend. With the level of donations this year being fairly low, this could be the last reunion for a while.
The Town of Darien has been very nice letting us use the town facilities even though we are not residents of Darien. Unfortunately, they now require us to get Liability Insurance for $1,000,000. covering the Town of Darien just in case someone gets hurt. I have a feeling someone, at a picnic last year got hurt and is suing Darien. They never asked us for this Insurance before, that's why we need the money to run the reunions!
So, come on out to the beach and enjoy a day in the sun and sand, maybe for the last time.
We look forward to seeing you and your families again this Summer.
A Happy and Healthy Summer to all,
Lew Meyerson

Hi to all of you Cherry Lawners. Yes I think all of us have fond memories of Cherry Lawn and I found it very sad indeed to return to 120 Brookside Road only to see it was best to return to my memories as there was no Cherry Lawn. The Cherry Lawn I remember will always be in my mind as vividly today as in was in 1961 when I graduated. It was great to see you at the reunion last year. My best to all and I hope to hear from some of you....Emily

With the 8th Annual Cherry Lawn Get-together just around the corner, Sara Korzennik and I would like to inform anyone from out-of-town about information on local lodging. Last year we noticed everyone was going to different hotels after we left the restaurant, so we wanted to make you aware of the The Westin Stamford, just minutes from the Paradise Bar and Grille. Please check out the web site (http://www.westin.com/stamford) for additional information. *If you have an AAA card call 1-866-782-7737 for discounts. Hi I did not graduate from CLS but for the time I was there which was 69-71, I will never forget it. There was such a sense of peace there. I loved walking along Brookside Rd.
I went back to visit once after it closed with my husband. I left with such a feeling of sadness that I had lost part of such a beautiful memory. Everything was gone, I walked over to where the morning meetings were. I remember shivering through those meeting in the freezing cold. However, those meetings added to the tranquility of the place. I accidently found the website in google tonight. I don't know what made me look but I did and I was so happy that other people shared my feelings. Most people won't remember e I was kind of shy, but I remember many of you.
For those of you who might I am married to a correction officer and I have 3 children ages 24,19 and 17. My oldest is an english teacher, my middle one goes to the University
of Buffalo and my youngest will be in 12 th grade in the fall. Anyway hope everyone is ok. Amy Reichman if you see this "hi".

The website continues to impress me.
I thought I would share this with some of my old friends. For me, this is a strange moment..
I just put my oldest daughter on a flight to Cancun with a group of her best friends. I was about the same age when Carla Sklan and I went to Israel togther back in 1969. I had a wonderful time, happened to miss Woodstock. but the experience to Jerusalem will always remain in my heart. Today, I still chat w/ Carla and I consider her a best friend.

I guess everyone knows, Vivienne Eisner Margolis has a very special place in my hart. She is resopnsible for helping me to see a diffrent perspective of life and only I, I guess, can understand and realy appriciate that. I visited her at her condo in Columbia, MD, which is near me in the D.C. area. She has cooked some wonderful dinners for me and we also talked periodicly -- she was a very creative and dynamic person. She will be deeply missed by me and I'm sure all of us.

Hi Everybody! The collection of scanned Cherry Pit Yearbooks is slowly growing. The latest addition is the 1972 Cherry Pit, which was the last one published. I'm currently waiting for a few promised books to arrive so I can begin scanning them as well. The only other Cherry Pit I have in my possession is the 1971 Book, which at 160 pages may be the biggest one ever produced!
