Cherry Lawn Message Board
2006
Happy New Year to all, and I hope we see all of you in SF at the reunion
February 16-18th.
The time has come to learn whether you are planning on attending the February CLS reunion. We have a definite crew of about 50 solid YESES - many with spouses or significant others and many coming solo, so everyone should feel quite at home. There are still plenty of hotel rooms available at both the Comfort Inn and the Conventry Inn, and others willing to share a room, but you
MUST register by January 16th to guarantee our reduced group rates.
Caterers and hotels need to know what to plan as well as our own reunion crew! Please don't leave things until the last minute, so I can also find some time to enjoy this event.
A little guilt never hurts now and then.
I'd imagine there will still be rooms after that date, but given that this is a holiday weekend, the rates will rise, and options may become more limited. There are still local alumni willing to serve as hosts at there homes if this is a preferred way to attend.
PLEASE LET ME KNOW ASAP IF YOU KNOW ONE WAY OR THE OTHER, SO I CAN PLACE YOU ON OR OFF THE LIST.
Even better yet, if you are planning on attending, go on-line and fill in the registration form; send it to me either on-line or via snail mail, along with your check made out to Dianne Grossman for either $50.00
per person for the dinner only; $25.00 per person for the brunch only; $75.00
per person for both. Please feel free to send a little extra to help me cover costs not included in these fees.
My address is 6124 Libby Road. NE, Olympia, WA. 98506-1629.
Call me if you have any questions: 360-943-6651 or my cell, which may be a better bet: 206-550-0933
LOOKING FORWARD TO HEARING FROM YOU SOON! AND
REMEMBER TO SHOW ME THE MONEY $$$
Respectfully yours,
Dianne

This year I pray for our children to be released from Iraq.
My daughter signed up for the Army right before 9/11, to get a good college education and job security. Because of a technicality, she never left. I am especially grateful for that technicality, and for every holiday season that she is home with us and safe. June, I will write again soon and Dianne, thanks for all the emails. Happy Holidays! June Kaplan, I got your two phone messages but have been out of the country for most of Nov. I went to Guatemala on a medical mission. It has been an extrodinary experience, of mutual admiration, giving and true medical integration. E-mail me if you get a chance. I'm just finishing another semester at grad school. I will be offically done with my MSAc in August '07. Love to you June and all other CLSer's.

Sorry David,
I sort of remember a Carey Kameras. No relation? Wrong last name, probably. I think I may have been in a "fog" some of those days! My college reunion is coming up soon, 30 years, and I can't remember most of my classmates at Emerson, but I do remember names at CLS. Mind tricks, I guess.

Ruth, unless my parents had a secret life (they did, but that's another story), I never had a brother, but if I did, I'm sure he'd be doing just fine. Dianne, I'm really hoping I can make it out to the left coast, but I can't nail it down. The Mine Workers contract expires Dec. 31, and I may be called upon to produce agitprop in the coalfields, or be disobedient in a civil fashion, or pay a debt to society, or something. I will let you know when things clarify.

Hi Dave, June, Ruth and Arab,
Hope you are all enjoying the blustery fall we're having and getting into the holiday spirit. I know I definitely will place myself in that category.
As always... I have questions... Dave, what's your current status about coming to the west coast reunion? June, I promise to call you during the next couple of days - probably Wednesday evening. Ruth, I hope voters proved they still had the ability to question authority; now I hope we can all own up to those changes; and Arab... how the heck are you? Are you still in Africa in one of the most dangerous places on Earth? Details... please share some of your adventure and experiences. I for one would LOVE to hear all about it.
All the best to everyone.

Hey June, I think Bazz really liked that story about Macbeth. I remember him telling it during rehearsal for Othello. It may have been appropos, as I was cast as the drunken porter, a role whose lines discuss at length the link between inebriation and male, er, dysfunction. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Had I graduated from CLS, I would have been '59 - or same as Joan Strasser, who I knew very well. Instead, all I can note is I attended from 1951 to 1954. Teachers I distinctly recall were Mrs. (Meta) Williams and Mrs. (darned if I can recall her first name; students were not supposed to know those personal details) Spooner.
I was reviewing the obit pages at this site, and noted Marylin Halevi. I distinctly remember her as the younger 'brat" of my contemporary, Marc.
In a paragraph or less, I went on to Indian Mountain School and South Kent School. I then went to the University of Illinois majoring in Accountancy. I dropped and went into the US Air Force. While serving in Viet Nam, I decided there "must be a better way' to earn a living in this life, so I got 're-motivated', and after leaving service during 1969, returned to University from which I graduated during 1970 and subsequently got my CPA during 1974.
After graduation, I moved to Chicago and went went to work in the railroad industry. During 1981, on the eve of my railroad going kaput from a bankruptcy during 1977, I left and started my own CPA firm. Such served me well until I retired during 2003. Not wishing to go through the grief of attempting to sell a small practice, I simply folded it and referred the clients to other practicioners - and that was that!
Since then, I read the New York Times, make a "visit or two' to the family in Greenwich, play on the internet (discovering this site in the process may I add) , and otherwise "keep my nose clean".
I never married in this life.
So much for all of that; Joanie, if you review this site, I'm still out there "live and kickkin'.

one morning meeting in 1969 gearing up for graduation, Baz quoted an actor friend of his in either Hamlet or Macbeth--the actor had messed up his lines--instead of saying "screw your courage to the sticking place" he said, and i quote Bazil, "stick your courage to the screwing place..." alas my poor virgin ears, Baz could be a bit of a rogue, eh?

Hey Mike, Photo of the Month "alumni-babes?" Is that like "girls of southern New England"? Nonetheless, always great to see Barbara and Laura, even as they provocatively display their etchings.
On a lighter note, everyone get out there and VOTE on Tuesday, preferably early and often. Yeah, I know the Demos are shmucks, but they're our shmucks. Here in Virginia where I work, we're constantly reminded by Sen. George "Macaca" Allen that racism and violence still hold places of honor in American politics.

I have recently added a Christmas 1940 Cherry Pit, and a 1950 Cherry Pit to the online archive. If you have an interest in Cherry Lawn, I highly recommend reading what students wrote in ALL of these books. It's a real eye opener to various times in our history as a school, a nation, and a world. You went to school with some pretty amazing and forward thinking people!

Thank you, June, for the lovely message. Dianne G. emailed me and asked me to add some more current photos and in my haste, I added a quick album called " My extended Family" and uploaded the first crop of photos. Brian, my husband, is a very old friend, whom I married in 2002 and is my knight in shining armor. I out a link to CLS with a photo of the bridge, thanks to Mike Manners, but it is toward the end of the blogs. I really did have some good friends at CLS and some excellent teachers. My favorite was Basil Burwell, who did not make fun of my poetry. I did find I was more artistic and attended the Museum School of Fine Art in Boston, in conjunction with Emerson College. June, I hope you still have the zest for life and the uniqueness, you had at CLS. I remember you as truly gifted.

I would like to add my best wishes to Mr. Zuber. He had a big influence on me. I passed on a masters in history for law after college. Now I'm not so sure it was a good choice. I still have (and occasionally refer to) The Oxford History of the American People by Morrison that Mr. Zuber inscribed and gave to me as a gift in 1965. His enthusiasim and sense of humor still make me smile after more than 40 years. Scott Ridge Class of 1965

Happy, Happy Birthday, Mr. Zuber.
I graduated in '54 with a lifelong love of history and archaeology - all because of you. The passion started in 9th grade with your class on the history of Egypt. It was a fascinating and outstanding course. During the year, You took us on a mueseum field trip to NYC, and I saw a partially unwrapped mummy in an open sarcophagus. That cemented the passion. The passion has permeated what I read, study, and how I have traveled since that time.
Thank you for inspiring and educating me. I hope you have a wonderful year.
Warm wishes, Helen Ogus Albright, '54

I will be collecting data continuously; however, I will be asking positive respondents to choose between LV/SF for the reunion's location if the choices remain too close to make a definitive decision. I have received over 70 responses thus far with over 50 being positive in nature. If you've been hesitating to press the reply and send key, hesitate no longer!

Hi Folks, WOW!! This is the first time I've ever looked at the message board. What a great place for me to remind everyone to respond to the west coast reunion interest survey, so we can get an idea who MAY be interested and whether you'd prefer to have it in LA or Las Vegas, which could change if responses start pouring in all voting for Hawaii or Olympia, WA? that's okay. I like egetting out of town. The date SEEMS to be getting set for Saturday, Feb. 17th. Please feel free to contact anyone you know, who may not have gotten my survey either via e-mail or snail mail because there are a lot of unknowns at this point. I will be mailing snail mails on Monday, the 14th. Please e-mail me any thoughts you may have. this should be a great event since the alumni are very special people indeed! I, like the rest of you who have posted comments, had a magical time during this past reunion - it was by far the most enjoyable for me. Love to you all, Dianne

The world's top 360 degree photographer, Jook Leung, just informed me that he has
put a panorama of Chris King (son of Kathy Drabkin, CLS '66) and me on his website. It was taken at my latest gallery opening. Thought you CLS'ers
would get a kick out of it. Check this out:
http://360vr.com/WildWoodGallery/
Use Control on your keyboard to zoom in and the shift key to zoom out. You can look everywhere including straight up and straight down. Also note that I am in the window with Chris but also standing inside the gallery in the background. This is a high resolution image and you can zoom in quite a bit. I don't know about Chris but you need a 360 degree fisheye shot to photograph me these days. The lens is similar to the circular fisheye I used to take photos that are in the 1968 Cherry Pit.

I don't think Fern had a dollar. All she had was Frank Zappa's album with UP AGAINST THE WALL on it, and she played it at max volume as close to 24/7 as she could. Poor Sue! Poor Alese! (in the room next to Sue and Fern)... I used to like that song till it met Fern. Fern was definitely a character. Who was it from CLS that related the story of seeing someone on Jerry Springer who looked a lot like Fern and was named Fern? I can't remember who told me that! But if it's true it wouldn't surprise me... :) I have a dear friend who lives in Jerusalem... he's a dixie land jazz musician. He and a few others have been taking trips to bomb shelters recently, to play music and make balloon animals for the kids (and adults!). He has been near several bomb explosions, but is safe. I guess the people in the shelters definitely appreciate the music and balloons... you do what you can, huh?

What were they thinking? You're supposed to use a rolled-up dollar bill with powder.
As for Israel, I have a niece who lives north of Tel Aviv. Her in-laws, who are from Haifa, have moved into her grandmother's bomb shelter. Still, I get messages about dinners out and other trivia. I think when wartime is the norm, you learn to compartmentalize.

oh, Sue! I forgot about the Fern fire (and I forgot about Fern too - or was that a subconscious memory block happening?)! I guess it's her fault that I am a frozen novelty in the mind of Dave! what a concept...! No comments from the peanut gallery, please! Gee, Jon, I don't know where you were - probably in the dorm with all the other teenaged lechers, huh? such is the course of the life cycle... And Juniper: yes, we are all worried about the middle east, especially those of us who have friends/family there. I know a lot of you remember Elise Samelson (now Teitelbaum), who lives there - she recently moved south of Be'r Sheva, in the Negev, and is not in the north - hurray! I owe her an email, and she will assure me that it is safe for her (even if it wasn't, I think she would tell me that, though). She will welcome email from anyone who sends it. I think her email is on the site, but if not, let me know and I will get it to you. And Hank, my folks loved the 'good' picture, so thanks from them! Love you all, A!!

Alese - there was too a fire - right before mid-terms: Fern Rudin & Iris ? were pulling an all nighter in the upstairs bathroom & lit a detergent box on fire, got freaked & put it in a toilet which burned. No need for them to have crammed for exams - they were out of school that morning. Fern was my roomie at the time.

Jon Ames '70 <mrnoodles@earthlink.net>
L.A., CA - Monday, July 31, 2006 at 16:23:48 (EDT)
No, Hank... it was a different fire drill, during the 68-69 year. It was after "The Fire", and the new girl's dorm was just open. I suspect that the alarm system had a few gremlins that needed working out, because I recall a whole bunch of alarms (but no fires!) that winter. One was memorable to me because I wound up as a human popsicle...
Alese <abcesq@comcast.net>

Alese, I remember that famous fire drill. I was a faculty member until June, 1968 so it must have happened, if we're talking about the same incident, in the winter of 1967-68. Am I right?

What an incredible weekend! It was wonderful to reconnect with old friends and meet new old friends. It's as if the collective memory of Cherry Lawn makes us all old friends even though some of us were meeting for the first time. I have to admit I was nervous about seeing everyone after so many years, but you all made me feel so welcomed. Thank you, one and all, for the food and the laughter, but most of all for the friendship and sense of belonging. A big thank you to all of you who work so hard to put these reunions together. Maybe he didn't cuff me because he thought I might like it! and NO, I won't confirm or deny that, so don't ask - just use your imagination, but don't get too carried away! Poor Duke just wanted to sit in the shade and abuse the tennis ball - no CLS'ers for him! Probably the first (and last) time a cop ever did anything nice for CLS'ers... Ed and I had a wonderful time at the CLS reunion. Such a pleasure to meet Sonya, Pete, Mike, Laura, Cynthia and a number of others who added so much to the laughter and congeniality of the day. We must of have brought the rain from mid-state NY :-) some of it waited for us halfway home! I gave my copy of THE RAES to Sonya who informs that she has already finished reading it and has gleaned information she had no idea of concerning Joel D. (The Raes where both teachers at CLS during the late '20s. Their three sons students. The eldest, Walter, became my mother's first husband or 'pre-father' as I have come to call him.) Thank you Laura and Mike for the invitation to attend your gathering - MARVELOUS!

My head is still spinning......no, not from the drinks at the dinner! I wasn't THAT buzzed! What a great weekend I had seeing all you people again and in some cases for the first time. I got back to L.A. at midnight (Pacific Time). I'm already looking forward to next year. A bunch of us went over to the old campus and walked around using Hank's prints to help orient us as very little is left. They were a huge help in visualizing what once was. But I do think Alese took a little TOO much glee in claiming her parking space in Burwell's old classroom! He'd probably find it amusing. But you can see remnants of old walkways and steps and many old trees are still there. There's also the bridge and the pond and the baseball field....We took a bunch of pics there and one in particular needs to be made available to Mike to post here.
Thanks to everyone for welcoming me back into the fold as if I'd never been gone. I don't think you have any idea how I feel.....then again maybe you do.

David Landsman, Jon Ames and Mike Epstein (in no particular order, so don't be mad that you're third, Mike!) !!! It was SO WONDERFUL to see you again after so many years (really so few years - we're not really this old, are we?). I will personally murder all of you if you don't keep in touch with CLS or dare to not show next year! Gee David - a little tipsy kept you from dinner? Since when does that stop you?? :) Next year come back to the hotel with us and take the shuttle over - you won't get lost, and tipsy won't matter! For all of you - as usual, it was a delightful day, and now it's too long till next year. But there is email, snail mail, phones, and cars, so I will be keeping in touch (even if I procrastinate in returnng calls or whatever...). I can't wait till all the pix are posted.... And for anyone who does not yet have a set of the famous Gans prints, get your butts in gear - what are you waiting for? I wish I had gotten to say goodbye. From Sandra, and myself, a big thank you goes out to all those who attended, but especially to Mike, Cynthia and Laura for putting it all together, and to Jan for all the wonderful food! Carlos,
I just supply the prints. The matting and framing has been done by those CLS'ers who received the cards. I will check on the cost of sending you a set via Global Priority Mail.

This is a CHERRY LAWN reunion, folks. That's the school that used to boast that classes would only move indoors if the ink froze in the inkwells. There have been many reunions held when the weather looked grim, but we have NEVER had to retreat. We are not going to run for the Westin unless it's really a sustained monsoon. There is adequate shelter at the beach to deal with short rains or drizzle. It will be fine.
Mike Manners - webkeeper

The plan is to meet at the beach. The Weather Channel is saying that most of the day looks good. If the weather gets iffy, we will probably retreat to the Westin, where most of you are staying. Think dry.

You guys are SCARING me!
We have recently been in touch with and heard from Steve Kramer (class of '69) who is living in Georgia, Eliot Gorson ('69) in California, Andrew Soloway ('69) who still doesn't give much information--come on, Andy be back in touch with your pals from the past; and Norma Redstone ('52)--who was thrilled to know so many from her class have attended reunions over the past couple of years.
Kathy Langerlan plans to attend this summer. Kathy is the daughter, err step-daughter of Walter Rae who attended CLS in 1930 along with his 2 siblings, John & Robin-while their parents were both teachers at CLS. How about that!
Looking forward to seeing you all & making this another incredible event! Love, Laura!

OK, Jon, Mike & Lew! have checkbook, will travel! I think the donations to the Alum Assoc. are tax deductible (Lew, are they??). And I will make Jon's check payable to the CLS Alum Assoc! :) Without these donations the reunions are MUCH LESS likely to happen! So if you like the reunions.... (nuff said!). And HANK - yes, the prints are awesome, and I am looking forward to showing off my matted and framed prints, and seeing how others had theirs finished. So for those of you who don't have a set yet, bring an extra check and relieve Hank of the burden of taking home the unsold sets... you won't be sorry! - - A

Thanks for the kind words about the cards, Mike. Much is owed to Adria Frede for finding the original cards and negatives on Ebay and pointing them out to me. I'm very pleased that the cards are being enjoyed by so many Cherry Lawners and have enabled the reunion to take place this year.
Let's keep it going! Next year's reunion will be around before we know it. Wasn't the 2005 reunion just a couple of months ago? :-)
Just in case anyone loves the matted and framed CLS cards that people are bringing to the beach and has the urge to make donations at the reunion I will bring a couple of extra sets of the cards with me. Bring your checkbooks!

Hi Jon, We have found that the trick to a favorable weather window for our day at the beach is for everybody to bring an umbrella. That seems to be enough collective mojo to keep things from getting too serious. We've had brief sprinkles a few times, and that's about it. If it pours, we'll all just have flashbacks that we are at Woodstock again. Lewy, as far as I can tell, is still there anyway!

Well isn't this nice? I got an email from Westin Hotels to remind me of my reservation and it included a seven day weather forecast for the Stamford area. It appears that there are possible T-storms Friday and Sunday, but just mostly cloudy on Saturday. Of course, that means it'll be beautiful on Friday and Sunday and we can probably expect a monsoon on Saturday. But I thought it was a nice touch to get that email.

Don't forget to bring a copy of the permit so you can get into the beach! There was a copy printed on the mailing that went out, and you can also print out a copy from a link on this website located in the

My name is Carlos Brandão and I went to Cherry Lawn during the years of 1969 & 70.
I Played Football and Baseball for CLS and was a member of the team that played the finals in 1970 against Darien High School, having Michael Angione as our pitcher and Gary Gaines as our catcher (probably the best team CLS ever had).
I ve been keeping track of what s going on with the Web Site and the CLS reunions for the past couple of years, and I would like to congratulate Mike Manners for the sensational job.
In 2002 for professional reasons I left NYC and came back to Brazil, I live in Rio de Janeiro.
I hope that all of you at the CLS reunion on July 22nd have a really great time.
Alese, drink one for me Saturday, Jose Cuervo shot and a Heineken.
By the way, why not organize a reunion for CLS in Brazil / Rio de Janeiro. It could be a lot of fun for everybody!!

Hello all,
I'm really excited about meeting all of you at the reunion, and am just a little bit nervous, since I don't feel like I know a soul except Hank, whom I haven't seen for 40 years! Soooo,if you see someone wandering into the bar at the Westin, who looks insecure and in need of a stiff drink, it's me. (I'll be with my husband, who knows no one at all.) Wave, say "Hi," and let me know who you are. I have faith, based on my two summers at CLS in '65 and '66, that you'll all be great people to get to know, and I'm really looking forward to meeting all of you. Ellen

I will leave the shuttling to someone else!! And put me down for a couple of T shirts too! I also had one of the CLS gray ones, but over the years it mysteriously disappeared... I remember that Candy Fried and I each had mega large ones, and wore them as dresses (really short ones, though!)... those were the days! As for the Hank Gans prints, mine are framed and matted (some of you saw them when we got together for dinner this past winter), but I will bring them to the reunion so everyone can see how great they are. Laura tells me that she is bringing her matted and framed prints too... see y'all next weekend. And Jon - don't drink too much without the rest of us... it's not fair! But it's gotta be 5 o'clock somewhere, right? :)
Alese <abcesq@comcast.net>

And to Mike....I think that idea for the T-shirts is a great one. I got my prints from Hank a while back (not yet framed) but they are terrific. I was glad to do my part. I had a grey CL T-shirt that I loaned to a girl in college (don't know why she needed a shirt) but that was the last I ever saw of it. I guess I shouldn't have believed her when she said she'd wash it and get it back to me. R-i-i-i-ght! Put me down for 2 XLs.

I really feel the need to say this.
As time has gone by, the vountary contributions to keeping reunions going have
understandably dropped off to almost nothing. There is no secret "war
chest" of funds. We have always done our best to keep overhead as low as possible. Next year, we are considering eliminating the traditional snail mailing for those who have email. Every penny really counts at this point.
This year we got a reprieve. Hank Gans, CLS 67 found some original negatives for a set of CLS postcards on Ebay and he made the effort to bid and win them. He then offered to provide sets of high quality reproductions as an incentive for donations
of $50 or more. Hank did a lot of work, and has further donated the production and shipping costs. It was a great success, and in reality, this year's reunion was made possible by Hank's contribution.
Those postcards will not be available forever, so if you want them, now is
the time! When you see him at the reunion, please be sure to thank him. Without his project, there really might not have been a reunion this year.
I am currently working on a similar fundraiser to hopefully ensure that
there will be a 2007 reunion. It involves reproductions of authentic Cherry Lawn Tee Shirts as a
donation incentive.
Oh, look! It's after 5 O'Clock here! See ya! Thanks, Hank!

Lew, I never should've said anything and just let people think I've aged very gracefully......
and to address Dave K.'s fears about the dark meaning of Mr. Noodles...... We have West Highland Terriers (2 at the moment Broozer and Hurricane). Noodles was the first one and he was actually named after a character Robert DeNiro played in "Once Upon A Time In America". David "Noodles" Aronson was a Jewish gangster in early 20th century NY. I actually had a chance to tell him that story and he seemed amused by it.
See? Nothing evil about it......well, except for the gangster part.

I think we've tapped this out. After all, imitation is the highest form of flattery. What concerns me is Jon's handle. "Mr. Noodles" is deeply disturbing. It conjures up an image of a black helicopter-operating domestic surveillance dude, done in claymation as rendered by Terry Gilliam. But maybe that's just me.

To all and particularly to Mike Manners I'd like to apologize for using that little bit of humor two messages ago. Hello. I am not a CL graduate but have news related to the Raes of the 1930s era.
John and Helen Rae were faculty at CL late '20s, early '30s. Their three children, Walter, John and Robin resided at the school with them.
In the 1928 yearbook on this site, I found a story by Walter and under the "Junior" column a poem my Robin Rae.
Here is the kicker -
I have recently - try five days ago - learned that my mother, Hilda Elizabeth Nordberg, was married during the '30s to Walter Rae. The divorce was final 23 Dec. 1938.
Does anyone know of or have any further information regarding any of the family? My mother obviously didn't leave any :-) personal information other than the enthusiasm she had for the family when they stayed at their summer home in her hometown of North Stonington, Ct.
I believe that Walter died in 1998 in New Britain; his parents in the 1960s. The other sibs?
It is possible that the book "The Raes" by Anna N Coit, a copy of which is on its' way from the North Stonington Historical Society will answer some of the above queries.
If so, I'll post another note.

Laura makes a very good point about the location of the reunions. Although it is held at Pear Tree Point Beach, the actual venue is the picnic area at the far corner of the park, which has shade, tables, charcoal grills, and very close parking. It's pretty darned comfortable. So, if you have been staying away because you thought we were all broiling in the sun all day, laying on towels, fuggedaboutit! This isn't a swimsuit contest. Please do your best to attend this year. We all miss you!

I received my set of postcard-pix-replications of the school before New Years --that is, I received them before New Years, and they really are impressively clear and beautifully processed. Thanks to Hank Ganks for the beautiful work; I'm in the process of framing them now! And a special thanks to Susan Dube Gombert for the WONDERFUL gift! I will treasure them.
Great to see that the summer reunion is on again for July 22. Remember folks, that it is a picnic area that happens to be at the beach. There is shade, there is water, there is sand--and it's a great place to reconnect, see old friends & make new ones. Look forward to seeing all you class of 1956'ers. Hope we can make this year an even better turnout. (And class of 50, 51 & 52--we've missed you the last two years. Where've ya been?) Mike Manners--the website just keeps getting better. Hi, Ellen Weiss! I looked for you for *many* years. I even contacted the NPR producer, Ellen Weiss, who gets credited every day on "All Things Considered" to see if she might be you. She was friendly and understanding but, obviously not you. Well, I'm glad you found your old friends. We have a lot of catching up to do, for sure. I'm far from the only one who will be glad. Jesse lives about 6 miles from you in Bethesda. I know he and Jay Sellinger, who I saw at the 2005 CLS reunion, will surely be delighted you have finally found us. By the way, I also got sick at Bunratty Castle but it turned out to be German Measles. Wow! What a strange experience. Goodness knows why I googled Cherry Lawn tonight - I just did, and all this was here! I didn't go to "regular" CL, but went to summer school in 1965 ( in a futile attempt to pass Algebra) to find out if there was life outside of stuffy New Jersey suburbia. I made several trips to visit CL during the following winter, and then went on the amazing trip to England and Ireland with Bazz and the Zubers during the summer of 1966. I truly believe that Bazz Burwell and the friends I made at Cherry Lawn saved me from an utterly dismal adolescence! I often find myself thinking about how incredily transformative that trip was to me. Bazz would have been pleased to learn that I went on to get a masters in In English with an emphasis on Irish literature. He'd also be glad that I've learned to hold my liquor since I drank too much mead at Bunratty Castle and threw up all over the floor!! I tried to find Bazz a few times to no avail. I'm sad to read that he died before I could locate him. I live in Takoma Park, MD now, and since there was no Cherry Lawn left to which I could send my own sons, I found the next best place, Buxton, in Williamstown, Mass. It felt strangely like home.

A bit more trivia on Thelonious Monk. In the early 80s, I was press secretary to a congressman (I.T. "Tim" Valentine) of North Carolina's 2nd District. Anyway, one day in walks Bobby Monk, who says, if memory serves me right, that he's Thelonious' nephew. As I recall, he was pitching for federal money to establish a memorial for the guy in his home town of Rocky Mount, which was in the district. Nice guy. I don't think he got the money though.

Hi Fullis - Abby Hayett is listed in the directory. I haven't checked out all of the others, but if someone was in the "class of 19xx", but graduated elsewhere, they will be listed with the class from the last year they attended. Some of the names you mentioned are not listed at all in the directory. I will add them with the notation of "Address unknown". That way, at least those looking in the directory may have their memory jogged. There are no official school class lists to work from, so we don't even have all the names of people who are missing. If anyone knows the name of someone who is missing, and whose name does not appear anywhere in the directory, please contact me. Every little tidbit helps!

Well they could refer to us 'ever youthful' baby boomers....on second thought that would get annoying pretty fast too. I guess we're stuck with "AGING". Oh $%&!X%!

I dunno, Jon. I think I'd rather be "aging", than the all too obvious alternative!

With all due respect to those born before 1946, I'm just curious.....Is it just me or is anyone else tired of being referred to "aging baby boomers"?

And me as well. Just mailed my check off. Look forward to getting them. I know I have some old CLS pics from the late 60's but I'll be damned if I can't find them. I haven't given up the search, tho!

I too, sent in my fifty bucks. I just HAD to have a set of those photos! They will assume a place of honor in my office as soon as I get them properly framed. I'm going to have them all mounted in one vertical frame. I can't thank Hank Gans enough for doing this.
Here's the link to get your own set:

Just received my set of prints. What a fantastic way to contribute to the future of CLS reunions! Everyone should purchase a set for their own.
I am constantly amazed by Hank Gans' talent & photographic craft, his dedication to the school, and reminded how fortunate we are to have this caring Cherry Lawner in our midst. Kudos to Hank!

Thanks Hank! The post card prints have arrived, and I have had them double matted and framed. They look AWESOME, and if I remember, I will bring them in July so everyone can see how great the finished picture collection looks! Everyone should order a set for sure! - - Alese

Richard Bottfeld,
I remember your.
John was the best man at my first wedding, in London, way too many years ago.
He was married to a girl named Susan and lived near the channel coast.
He has a brother named David who I have not seen since the early to mid seventies when he left Israel to return to the U.S.
Their family home was in Rye, New York. I know no more.
All Good
