Hello, everybody.  Sorry I couldn't make it to this year's reunion.  I was studying for the Connecticut bar exam, which was July 25th and 26th.  (I'll let you know in October if I made it.  It's basically a pass/fail test, and either way it comes out, I'm going to be surprised.)  I was delighted to see from the posted photos that Bob Nurin, Bob Shankman, and John Shepherd were there, as usual, and was that Richard Hart (ne Berkowitz) I saw in one of them?  Or just someone who looks like him?

Well I was knocked out when I did a search on Basil and stumbled into this great legacy. Basil was my literary teacher at William Penn Charter in Philadelphia. PC is another unique school with a historic background and progressive education model. Bazz knew what he was doing and where to look. I could gush for pages about my experience with Bassil and want to point out point blank that his guidance, support and enthusiasm resulted in my book “Journey Home”. Although it was a brief interlude our meeting was essential in bringing this book to life. I want to somehow express this to his family – how can I get in touch with his surviving family.

Is Nancy still with us?

Paul B. DiMarco DMarcPB@evms.edu

Mike,

Thanks for responding – in a very real way I feel connected to the “Cherry Lawn” school through my brief association with Basil. Please feel free to post my comments on your message board. I can not overstate the landmark impression he made on me – the inspirational words he passed on to me at such a young age and the respect I felt as he and I accepted each other at face value. It was and is an inspiring meeting of two minds – that were open to each other and my book is a direct result of that “Cherry Lawn” spirit. There is a copy of the book headed for the William Penn Charter library simply dedicated to Basil and signed by me.

Paul B. DiMarco DMarcPB@evms.edu

how about olives on pizza, or in a putanesca sauce or perhaps with some feta and some good wine? or in a tapenade? or in your lover's belly button? :)

Differing vodkas and mixes and additives. Jalapenos, and other hot speecy-spicy condiments, etc. They had about a half dozen specific drinks listed but it sounded like you could mix and match anything you wanted. Bottom line? It would have kept you busy and out of the TSA's business.....they also had about 100 different beers listed.

If you're gonna put a piece of celery in a martini, you'll just have to get a bigger glass.......like that would be a bad thing. I'd like a Martini.....shaken, not stirred......and, oh yeah, extra-large. See? There's a positive side to almost everything......

Hi all Thanks Alese. I didn't want to pressure anyone so I never brought it up. But, since Laura did, the CLS fund is running dry, next years reunion is in doubt. SEND MONEY, any amount will do. Thanks again to Debbie Jacobson S. and Bob Shankman for your generous donations! For the folks who didn't show up, you missed the best day at the beach we ever had. Regards to all....Lew

Alese, something happened on Sunday afternoon that made us think of you: Susan Hubshman S. and I were sitting in the N.Y. Sports Grill at JFK waiting for our flights by eating and drinking an early dinner. Here's where you come in.....the menu not only listed a Bloody Mary, no, it went further.......they actually had a "Bloody Mary Menu". Listing many different variations of B.M.s (don't get sleazy on me now). I'm sure they could have easily accomodated any of your odd requests for concoctions there. Just file it away for the future if you ever find yourself in the JetBlue terminal at JFK......I personally don't think substituting olives for celery is all that weird.....well, maybe a little. Love J.A.

Lew, I am mailing a check. I forgot to write it on Saturday. Laura, thanks for posting Lew's address, because it saves me the time of looking it up. Jon, Dianne and all you west coasters: I am saving for February, and planning on being there, so save a seat for me! Hank, you are the only one who can really make me look good in pictures, so I am dying to see what the Bloody Mary looks like! :) And what a GREAT idea - the cake for Sonya! Does she like vanilla or chocolate? And can we get ice cream and balloons with it? Why not?? :) Love you all, Alese

Sonya (class of 32) and Herb Degan (class of 33) are both as fit and full of energy & good spirit as anyone from the later classes. A special toast to both Sonya & Herb! Saturday was indeed, a great day, the best weather in 10 years of reunions--warm, breezy but low/no humidity! The site is beautifully nestled on the inlet, with the sailboats surrounding us; the food is out of this world--amazing how much fun it is & how it all works out. Yup, we've been doing this summer thing now for 10 years, the same location for the past 8, the same third Saturday in July. And yes, Alese is correct, we made the decision to give up the mailing because the donations were dwindling considerably. We'd love to share the request for funds to keep the website going with more of the people who attend each year. So, if anyone does contribute an extra $1,000, we'd resume the mailing for next year; it would also cover the insurance for the beach day...and we would be able to send a car to pick you up. Seriously, though, no donation is so large that we won't accept it. Donations can be sent to Cherry Lawn School Alumni Association, c/o Lew Meyerson at 52 Pine Tree Hill Road, Shelton, CT 06484. Look forward to seeing you all next year!

We did miss you, Chuck. Alese, I'm just digitally processing your photo at the Paradise Grill now. That Bloody Mary with the olives is looking good right now. Don't worry...so are you. Next year we're going to have to do a cake for Sonya Schopick because it will be the 80th anniversary of her year at Cherry Lawn.

What a great weekend. The weather was spectacular.....'specially compared to last year. Dave Kameras already managed to get pics up on the website. Whew, Dave! What took you so long? Plans are afoot to have another Western version of a reunion in Feb. Probably the first weekend of the month. The general consensus is it will be in Las Vegas. Any possible developments will be disclosed as they materialize. So if you are at all interested start saving your $$$$ now. It was great to see all those again this year in Darien although the flights back and forth from L.A. can be grueling it really was worth the time. I'm already looking forward to next year.

Hi Chuck! I wondered where you were. No announcements were sent this year because funds are tight and a mailing costs about $300. And donations from alum are not always reliable, either. But the announcement about the reunion has been on the CLS website literally for months, with the date, and also information about the hotel (really good $ rate this year), and also about the dinner afterward. So where were you?? We missed you! Love you, Alese

So now I'm checking up ....and low and behold....it's today. OK so I've been a little out of it. I have to work in the am but will arrive in the afternoon. Count me in for dinner too. There is no Taxi strike. It's a few (6) drivers at one of the three Stamford Taxi companies who are doing what amounts to a minor sickout. The union is not involved, and even the affected company says they have been able to keep up with dispatches at normal speed. They said it only means there are no standing cabs at the train station. That's the latest from the Stamford Advocate.

Just to let you know, I read somewhere on the web that there's a taxi strike in Stamford, and as some of us have learned the Doubletalk has gotten rather pissy about heading that far southwest, so I'll probably rent a car after all. Of course, I'm just assuming that the West Coast shuttle won't have any seats left.

David Kamaras...the Doubletree was completely remodeled; the bar is a real bar and very decent. It will be a good place to meet and, in fact, they said they'd keep the bartender on that weekend into the wee hours if there were enough CLS'ers at the bar that wanted to hang out there. Everyone staying at the Doubletree: I just got an email from the sales rep at the hotel with whom I did the contract. She wants to know precisely when the shuttle will be needed to take people to the dinner at the Paradise Grill and when it will be needed to bring you all back. Can we discuss this here and come up with firm times for her? I'm also going to presume you want a shuttle ride to the CLS campus on Sunday, right? I told her months ago that this would be the case. And who needs a ride from the train station? Anyone? Anyone need a ride from the hotel to and from the beach on Saturday? I should probably be doing this all by email but this is more fun. If I don't get responses in the next day or so I'll start doing emails.

Has everyone seen "This Is My School"? It was a movie made by Larry Frish '46 while a student at Cherry Lawn, and it was nominated for an Academy Award. Several years ago, Michael Garfinkel, '66 made special arrangements with Larry Frish and had a run of VHS tapes, and later DVDs made of the movie that were offered for sale on the CLS website. If I remember, I'll bring a copy on DVD and a way to play it to the beach this year. It's really a great piece of work, and every Cherry Lawner should see it. Just be forewarned that I may have to leave around noon this year due to family commitments, so if you want to see it, you need to get there before I take off.

My plane is supposed to get into JFK at 330pm and I'll pick up a car and hopefully be in CT by 5ish......unless i get screwed by the weather again like last year and end up sitting on the tarmac in Syracuse for an hour or so because there were thunderstorms in NY and we had to refuel.....ugh! I am a nubie to this message board. I had found the CLS website a few years back and it brought tears(believe it or not) to my eyes. Jay Sitkin contacted me about 3 or so years ago and introduced me to the CLS web site. Since then I have spoken to a number of my former classmates. I warms my heart. I also attended the Grateful Dead concert, but remember it being at the Filmore East in NYC. I had a dentist appointment that day in the city and met the class at the theater, with Zuber making sure we alll entered the hall. Wonder if my memory still works. I lost my year books from '70 and '71 in a robbery in '73 so I have not had any reference to names or faces till just today... WOW. Send my best to Dr, Zuber, please. Regina

Hi Deni. I actually maintain a few websites, and I've tried the Yahoo route before, as well as other "off site" guest books. To fend off SPAM, they require a fair amount of manual intervention. Better than nothing, but not really a complete solution. It also takes away ownership of what is posted and makes it the copyrighted property of Yahoo. It unfortunately tends to draw interest and attention away from the main website. After trying "hosted" guest books and message boards, I concluded that they are fine for special interest groups that do not have a website, but do not really fit in with what we are doing. I'm actively looking for workable alternatives, but no luck so far.

We could do a yahoo group. The only down side would be that people would have to join; they couldn't just read the messages on the website...

Just a heads up.....plans are afoot to strike a better ($$) hotel deal in CT in July other than the Westin. It's not definite yet but please check the website reunion info link for the latest. If you were planning on making a reservation at the Westin don't do it just yet.

Hi David. If the spam filter folks go away for good, it's gonna be a pretty big problem for me. I'm hoping that if they do go away, someone else will at some point start providing a similar service. This one is free, but I would have no problem paying if that's what it takes. Otherwise, it will be pretty much impossible to keep it going. I have no way of dealing with floods of 50 Spam posts an hour. I've even considered the idea of having folks email their posts to me, and I would manually add them. There are issues with doing that, and to be honest, I just don't have the time. I actually manage several websites like this one that all have message boards!

Birdie, sounds to me like your reunion experiences are a bit luckier than others. Yet on another bright side, in light of Alese letting us down on the lottery, a fritzed-out spam filter means we should have an exciting assortment of investment opportunities in West Africa. funny that you should mention lotteries, Jon! I usually NEVER play them, but for some reason today I really did buy a couple of tickets. So if I win enough to get you here in July (after the taxes and all that stuff), this year it's my treat for you! So, now I guess we both cross our fingers.... and wait for the inevitable to happen - when I don't win and say to myself that I should have just put the money in the bank, or blown it on junk food or something else more enjoyable than little pieces of paper.... Anyway, see ya in July! And keep us all posted on the happenings in your life! LY ALL, @

HOORAY! There IS life outside the ozone! And maybe Elvis is there! I would personally prefer the west coast just because it is such a treat for someone from the east coast to be there (and to make an extended vacation out of it), but if LV is the location, so be it! I will save all my pennies for sure! And if I win the lottery, that's even better (I guess that means I will have to start playing it, huh?). Anyway, CT in July it is! Hi Alese, Sure!! I am definitely planning on helping to coordinate the next west coast reunion. It was so much fun planning this event and meeting all the new folks as well as reconvening with the "regulars," that I am already brainstorming details for next year. It had been discussed to hold the next reunion in Las Vegas since since so many folks had been quite enthusiastic about that location, so this may be the direction it takes. On the other hand, ther are several alumnus who live in the greater LA area, so perhaps that may win out as the chosen locale. Like last year, I will submit a questionnaire on-line to ascertain the intereset level of attendance and location, so keep your eyes posted. ANYONE READING THIS, WHO HAS NOT UPDATED THEIR E-MAIL WITH OUR WEBMASTER, PLEAE DO SO; ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN RECEIVING INFORMATION ABOUT ANY FUTURE REUNIONS IN THE WORKS. Alese, hoping you will be able to attend! All the best! Dianne

And defying all weather odds we had three perfect days of sun in the low 80s. Once again it was nice to see people I hadn't seen in a reeeeaaaalllly long time. And to meet others I'd never had the pleasure. Considering Dianne G. had to pull most of this off from 1000 miles away, I'd say we owe her a tremendous round of applause. Thanks also to Terry Paulding for putting together the brunch on Sunday at her facility in Emeryville. Nice blintzes! Only thing that could have made it better would have been if those that got stuck in the snow back East could have made it somehow. Well, there's always July in CT. Cynthia, Enid, Dube, David L, and Doug and others who didn't make it; you were sorely missed. George Clarke won the Rice-A-Roni award for coming the greatest distance, direct from Uganda; Dianne Grossman pulled off a great event & we all look forward to seeing each other again. I was so happy to come across the CLS website. I am sure that many of you felt the same almost-impossible-to-describe emotions as I did when you first saw it as well. Here are two memories to share. The first is the school trip in November of 1970 to a Grateful Dead concert at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester - no museums for us! Only at CLS.... The second is more unusual. When I was attending Columbia in the late 70s (anyone who may remember me is probably shocked but that is an other story) I entered an elevator in my usual preoccupied state and did not look carefully at a woman and a professor type who were already in the elevator and engaged in conversation. When the woman and the man got off the elevator I noticed them, and I was positive the woman was Ruth Dreesen. But they had disappeared before the doors closed and I had the chance to say anything. I have since read Ruth's letter and now I know she was there at the time and it was her!

Happy New Year to all, and I hope we see all of you in SF at the reunion February 16-18th.

The time has come to learn whether you are planning on attending the February CLS reunion. We have a definite crew of about 50 solid YESES - many with spouses or significant others and many coming solo, so everyone should feel quite at home. There are still plenty of hotel rooms available at both the Comfort Inn and the Coventry Inn, and others willing to share a room, but you MUST register by January 16th to guarantee our reduced group rates.

Caterers and hotels need to know what to plan as well as our own reunion crew! Please don't leave things until the last minute, so I can also find some time to enjoy this event. A little guilt never hurts now and then. I'd imagine there will still be rooms after that date, but given that this is a holiday weekend, the rates will rise, and options may become more limited. There are still local alumni willing to serve as hosts at there homes if this is a preferred way to attend.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW ASAP IF YOU KNOW ONE WAY OR THE OTHER, SO I CAN PLACE YOU ON OR OFF THE LIST.

Even better yet, if you are planning on attending, go on-line and fill in the registration form; send it to me either on-line or via snail mail, along with your check made out to Dianne Grossman for either $50.00 per person for the dinner only; $25.00 per person for the brunch only; $75.00 per person for both. Please feel free to send a little extra to help me cover costs not included in these fees. My address is 6124 Libby Road. NE, Olympia, WA. 98506-1629.

Call me if you have any questions: 360-943-6651 or my cell, which may be a better bet: 206-550-0933

LOOKING FORWARD TO HEARING FROM YOU SOON! AND REMEMBER TO SHOW ME THE MONEY $$$

Respectfully yours, Dianne
